Top Hotel Investing in Green Technology
The New Continental Hotel is Plymouth’s largest independent, family-owned hotel. Situated in a Grade II listed building on Millbay Road, it dates back more than 150 years.
The owners are committed to green hotel policies and the implementation of proactive measures to help protect and sustain the environment for future generations. The New Continental Hotel understands that by making positive choices they can reduce their effect on the environment.
Green Technology – The project:
The Directors requested the ability to lower the impact of the hotel on the environment, whilst looking at cost-effective, energy saving solutions for reducing the hotel’s gas and electricity consumption.
♦ In 2014, the Directors commissioned IU Energy to carry out an energy survey
♦ IU Energy identified areas of energy waste and proposed solutions
The proposed solutions included:
♦ Converting to LED lighting
♦ Optimising walk in refrigeration and drinks chillers
♦ Optimising gas central heating boilers
♦ Insulating hot water pipes in the basement boiler room areas
IU Energy project managed the installation of LED lighting across the bars, commercial kitchens, the hotel’s gymnasium, main ballroom, restaurant and various function rooms. The installation included state-of-the art dimmable LED technology, along with intelligent energy saving devices on the walk-in refrigerators and drinks chillers.
Figure 1 Monthly comparison of energy consumption figures for 2014 v 2015
Post project tracking over a six month period demonstrates a consistent drop in energy consumption by up to 11.7% per month, in comparison with the previous year (see Figure 1).
An optimisation unit was fitted to the gas central heating boilers, along with general hot water pipe insulation in the basement area as these were areas of significant gas consumption.
These actions resulted in an immediate 35% reduction in gas consumption compared to the previous month, as shown in Figure 2.
The New Continental hotel’s investment in energy saving, green technology has significantly reduced its energy consumption, thereby lowering its energy cost and improving its environmental performance. Additionally, comfort levels for the hotel’s visitors and staff have also improved.
Chris Cutts, New Continental Hotel:
“The hotel is very proud that the significant investment made in energy efficiency technology has reduced our environmental impact. IU Energy have been instrumental in assisting us to achieve significant energy savings and we found them very helpful, knowledgeable and efficient to deal with.”
