THE CLIENT

Boringdon Park Golf Club is set in 400 acres of parkland with spectacular panoramic views of Plymouth Sound and Dartmoor where amateur and professional golfers enjoy their two courses, public floodlit driving range, shop and clubhouse serving freshly prepared food every day.

This friendly, relaxed and modern club is located just 5 minutes from the A38 and only 10 minutes away from the centre of the ocean city of Plymouth with its historic visitor attractions and shopping areas.

THE CHALLENGE

Boringdon Park Golf Club were experiencing high energy costs and needed to find a way to reduce this overhead, in order to maintain the premium service they were providing to their members.

IU Energy were engaged to review energy usage and spend. By conducting an energy survey and no obligation audit we quickly identified measures which could be implemented to reduce consumption and areas where energy waste may be removed.

On initial inspection, Boringdon Park Golf Club had already made steps to reduce consumption. Their lighting was already in the process being switched to LED. The common benefit of adding control improvements to the efficiency of the mains gas heating system, was not suitable in this instance. The challenge was then to see how else IU Energy could reduce the dependence from the grid itself.

THE SOLUTION

Procurement

IU Energy used it’s tier one relationships within the supply market to secure a new energy contract for the gas and electricity, procured at best value; this offered Boringdon Park Golf Club peace of mind that their pricing was competitive in an increasingly uncertain market.

Solar PV

Reducing demand for procured electricity, IU Energy installed a 49.59kw Solar PV system onto the roof of the driving range

The installation was designed to minimise visual intrusion across the course and the rear of the driving range was the perfect location

Higher efficiency modules were selected during design to reduce the number of panels required to achieve the system size without the need to use more area for the installation than necessary

THE RESULTS

Competitively tendered utility supply contracts for both gas and electricity

Reduced consumption from the grid resulting in savings of approximately £5,500 per annum

Income generated via the Feed in Tariff at £2,600 per annum, (1st year)

Combined income revenue increase for the first year via the Solar PV – £8,100

Estimated payback of the upfront cost of the system of under 5 years; more than 15% ROI

CO2 reduction estimated at 30,000kg per annum
