Battery Storage

Battery Storage

In the first place, battery storage is now a main stream technology, both with and without Solar PV.

To put it another way, this energy storage technology is for any business. For many companies it is one answer to maintaining a 24/7 electricity supply. Another key point is it provides a cost-effective source of electricity for charging electric vehicles.

Battery storage increases self-consumption to up to 80%+

Particularly when connected to new or existing Solar PV. In general, this will reduce your electricity bills by as much as 20%. That is to say, you can store solar energy during the day and discharge it at night.

By the same token, it can protect against power outages. With the right solution, you also get full export control (to the grid).

No solar panels? No problem.

At the same time, battery storage technology can also charge from the grid. For this reason, it means you can store cheap, off-peak electricity overnight and discharge it during peak times.

With this in mind, customers on half-hourly tariffs can save an additional 15% on their energy bills.

What are the capacities?

Capacities for business energy storage vary from a few kW to multi MW capacities as can be seen in grid supplement applications. They are usually installed in modules so it is easy to add more. For instance, you can install additional storage as your business grows.

Which battery brand is best?

The first thing to remember is that IU Energy uses technology brands that are selected for reliability, longevity, product range and warranty. Indeed, in general it applies in this case to all our renewable and energy saving brands.

For energy storage for businesses we use Solax for several reasons. The two main ones being ten year warranties and a guaranteed 6,000 cycles (one full charge and discharge).

Notably, the other major benefit is their clever portal. This enables you and us to monitor performance.  That is to say, it makes service and maintenance especially easy because we are aware of any problems before you are.

FAQs

Probably. While it’s almost always possible to retrofit a battery storage system on an existing solar system, the cost and ease of doing so is heavily dependent on your current set up, including if your business takes single or three phase electricity, and the size of your inverter. It’s better to plan for this when installing your solar PV, or better still, fit it at the same time.

The general range for a solar battery’s useful lifespan is between 5 and 15 years. If you install a solar battery today, you will likely need to replace it at least once to match the 25 to 30-year lifespan of your Solar PV system, if you have one fitted.

No, the best technology is compatible with Economy 7 tariffs and Green Energy UK’s TIDE tariff. IU Energy works with the best battery manufacturers and thus we ensure their products are forward-compatible with other ‘smart’ tariffs forecast to become widespread once smart meters are fully installed.

Battery storage can reduce your electricity bills by up to 20% by storing solar energy during the day and discharging it in the evening. Battery technology can also charge from the grid, which means it can store cheap, off-peak electricity. Customers on ‘smart’ time-of-use tariffs can save an additional 15% on their energy bills by storing low-cost electricity and discharging it at peak time.

This varies from a few kW to multi mW capacities in grid supplement applications. Batteries can be combined to produce more storage as required.

The simple answer is yes, a battery storage installation will charge electric vehicles just as it will supply energy for the rest of your business. Battery storage simply extends the useful hours when you can recharge electric vehicles using Solar PV you’ve generated or off-peak electricity.

Not presently, battery storage isn’t a renewable energy source.
