Battery Storage

Battery Storage

Battery storage is now a main stream technology, both with or without Solar PV.

Battery storage is for any business and for many companies it is part of the answer to maintaining a 24/7 electricity supply and providing a cost-effective source of electricity for charging electric vehicles.

Installing battery storage can also increase self-consumption to 80%+, when connected to new or existing Solar PV. This will reduce your electricity bills by up to 20% by storing solar energy during the day and discharging it in the evening.

Battery storage can protect against power outages and with the right solution, you get full export control (to the grid).

The technology can also charge from the grid, which means it can store cheap, off-peak electricity overnight and discharge it during peak times when it is more expensive. Customers on half-hourly tariffs can save an additional 15% on their energy bills by storing low-cost electricity.

Capacities vary from a few kW to multi MW capacities in grid supplement applications. They are usually installed in modules and more can be added to produce additional storage as required.

Technology brands we use for all our renewable and energy saving installations are selected for reliability, longevity, product range and warranty. For battery storage we use Solax for a number of reasons – two of the main ones being ten year warranties and a guaranteed 6,000 cycles (one full charge and discharge). The other major benefit is their clever portal which allows both our clients and ourselves to monitor performance – ideal for service and maintenance because we are aware of any problems before our clients are.

Below are some of our case studies for projects we have been carried out in Battery Storage, followed by FAQs.

FAQs

Probably. While it’s almost always possible to retrofit a battery storage system on an existing solar system, the cost and ease of doing so is heavily dependent on your current set up, including if your business takes single or three phase electricity, and the size of your inverter. It’s better to plan for this when installing your solar PV, or better still, fit it at the same time.

The general range for a solar battery’s useful lifespan is between 5 and 15 years. If you install a solar battery today, you will likely need to replace it at least once to match the 25 to 30-year lifespan of your Solar PV system, if you have one fitted.

No, the best technology is compatible with Economy 7 tariffs and Green Energy UK’s TIDE tariff. IU Energy works with the best battery manufacturers and thus we ensure their products are forward-compatible with other ‘smart’ tariffs forecast to become widespread once smart meters are fully installed.

This varies from a few kW to multi mW capacities in grid supplement applications. Batteries can be combined to produce more storage as required.

The simple answer is yes, a battery storage installation will charge electric vehicles just as it will supply energy for the rest of your business. Battery storage simply extends the useful hours when you can recharge electric vehicles using Solar PV you’ve generated or off-peak electricity.

Not presently, battery storage isn’t a renewable energy source.
