Solar PV

Commercial Solar PV is by far the most popular method of generating renewable electricity for businesses. It’ll have an immediate impact on your grid energy consumption and put money back where you can spend it on the things you need to grow your business.

Whether you’re one of many hotels going green, or a manufacturer trying to become carbon neutral, Solar PV produces impressive performance, fast ROI and years of bottom-line benefit.

Commercial Solar PV remains the most widely adopted technology because of the savings it offers over grid supplied energy. Add high efficiency battery storage and the excess energy you generate during the day can be stored for night-time use.

IU Energy installs a range of commercial Solar PV solutions for small to large businesses and community energy, including roof mount and ground mounted up to 1MW in capacity. All elements of the works are carried out by our in-house expert engineering team – design, civils, electrical, control systems, metering and aftercare/servicing. Increasingly, these projects include battery storage technology and electric vehicle charging points and we are OLEV approved in commercial applications.

Technology brands we use for all our renewable and energy saving installations are selected for reliability, longevity, product range, Tier 1 manufacturing and warranty. For  Solar PV, there are two clear winners – BYD for commercial Solar PV and LG for domestic applications. BYD for example are a hugely innovative company with a long history in Solar PV, which is reflected in extended panel product and performance warranties. LG can guarantee 80% minimum output from their panels after 25 years and to back this up provide two warranties – one covering this performance over time and the other for quality of manufacture – the panels will continue to perform, despite the harsh environments they live in.

For inverters, we predominantly use three manufacturers – Solax, Solis and Fronius. Each meet our criteria and have various benefits depending on the application. Solax for example offer a 10-year warranty, whilst Fronius can provide intelligent export limitation for installations which may on occasions exceed grid limits .

We have been fitting Solar PV for 17 years and our Solar PV panels, inverters and mounts have been chosen through the experience of fitting thousands of them. We only supply Solar PV with long warranties, proven reliability, continuity of supply, efficiency and great after-sales support. To ensure this, IU Energy only uses Tier 1 manufacturers. Tier 1 is defined by 25-year warranties from companies who are likely to be around for that time. The classification means that they must manufacture their own panels (no outsourcing), must be recognised on Bloomberg and must manufacture a minimum number of panels per annum. We call this ‘bankability’.

Yes. IU Energy can design a solar array with panels that provide an additional 20% output per panel for the same surface area of their standard counterparts.

Generally, yes. Providing the structure is sound we can spread loads very effectively, considering other factors like direction and wind. The suitability of any site is assessed during our initial survey. Ground mounting may also be an option.

Yes. Examples are former agricultural land and for applications like Community Energy, or where roof structure limitations/orientation cannot be overcome.

The amount of electricity a solar panel produces depends on three important factors: the size of the panel, the efficiency of the solar cells, and the amount of sunlight the panel gets. These days, most solar panels are about 5.5’ tall and a little more than 3’ wide. Modern panels of this size are rated to produce anything from 250 watts to 360 watts output. If a 250w panel received full sun for one hour, you’d get 250 watt-hours of electricity. With 4 panels, you’d get a kilowatt hour (1 kWh).

This is dependent on several factors including number of panels and roof mounting. The best way to determine your likely costs is to contact us for a site survey.

Yes. Grid energy is only an upward trend in cost and Solar PV reduces your demand and consumption. Add high-efficiency battery storage and you can continue to use what you generated at night. You will also still be able to sell your excess to the grid.

It reduces generation but doesn’t negate it and there are things that can be done to overcome it.

Yes, but there are ways of overcoming it. There are automated panel cleaning systems and bird deterrents. This challenge should not put you off any more than the thought of cleaning windows would stop you fitting them.

Optimum is 30-35 degrees. There are other mounting options however. 

It depends on the space available and you’d need a new inverter.

Yes. However, the inverter and installation need to be prepared for battery readiness.

The simple answer is yes, a solar installation will charge your electric vehicles just as it will supply energy for the rest of your business. Even a small solar panel array with only 10 solar panels can provide enough power to charge a vehicle’s battery. Adding battery storage to this simply extends the useful hours when you can recharge an electric vehicle.
