ESOS DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING – 29 JAN 2016
THE GOVERNMENT’S MANDATORY ENERGY SAVINGS OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (ESOS) – OF WHICH BUSINESSES MUST COMPLY BY 29 JANUARY 2016
Businesses are being urged to act now to curb the financial implications brought by non-compliance. Five-figure fines are being risked if businesses do not act now achieve compliance.
ESOS is the governments mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme, which applies to large undertakings and their corporate groups.
It requires organisations that come under the scope of ESOS (see criteria below) to measure and submit energy audits across buildings, transport and industrial activities every four years. These audits must meet strict criteria set by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and must be carried out by a qualified lead assessor – such as IU Energy.
UK businesses qualify for ESOS if they fit into one or more of the following categories:
♦ 250 employees or more
♦ Annual turnover exceeding £38,937,777.00 and an annual balance sheet in excess of £33, 486,48.00
KEY DEADLINE – 5 Dec 2015
Many businesses to face 5-figure fines as they did not meet compliance by 5 December 2015 deadline
EXTENSION DEADLINE – 29 Jan 2016
Extension of 29th January has been given for businesses to appoint lead assessors & let the Environment Agency (EA) know they have started compliance by 29 Jan 2016
There are numerous routes to ESOS compliance, however, overall responsibility rests with participants themselves, regardless of which route they adopt.
Although there is no obligation to implement any of the efficiency measures identified in the audits, the scheme was introduced as it was believed the administrative costs would be outweighed by the financial benefits of implementing the recommended energy efficiency improvements.
