The Client

Established in 2004, Good Earth Growers is a highly successful group of independent growers based in Cornwall, born out of a collaboration between Sean O’Neil and Natoora. Natoora work with top local suppliers around the UK to supply their customers with the very best in local produce. Sean has been growing organic salads and vegetables for over fifteen years, working at Keveral Farm in St. Martins by Looe, Cornwall. The enterprise recently expanded to occupy 110 acres on the Pentillie Estate in St Mellion, Cornwall.

Through Good Earth Growers’ established and reliable distribution network, Cornish independent growers supply the freshest and best quality artisan fruit, edible flowers, baby vegetables, kale, micro-herbs and salads to some of the top restaurants in the country. The company makes regular deliveries to many of the UK’s most discerning restaurants, including a number of prestigious names in London, along with fine dining chefs throughout Cornwall.

As the business expands, there is also a new brewery ramping up to full production, producing artisan organic beers and there will soon be a top quality restaurant and farm shop on site.

The Challenge

Manager of Good Earth Growers, Andy Johnson (pictured), asked IU Energy to switch the business to a green tariff shortly after they took over the tenancy of the Pentillie land. This was to reflect their attitude to the environment, whilst also keeping costs down.

The business uses a significant amount of electricity all year-round, with demand from their large chill-room, pumped irrigation and the electric buggies they use to get around the site. In winter, lighting increases this substantially.

The second challenge was to address the billing, which was imbalanced because another business on the site was identified by the existing energy provider as the primary bill holder, but was in fact the smallest user. This meant them having to re-bill Good Earth Growers for their substantial usage, thereby causing increased administrative burdens on both parties and causing a financial challenge.

The Solution

IU Energy addressed both of Andy’s requirements, firstly carrying out a comprehensive and independent sweep of the best green energy providers in the marketplace. This independence is important, because it means Andy knew that we would not recommend an energy provider for any reason other than getting him the best deal.

We were able to source a competitive offer of a reliable green tariff at a comparable market price to the alternative, polluting, fossil-fuel generated sources.

Simultaneously, we sorted out Good earth Growers’ billing issues with a ‘change of tenancy’ in favour of Good Earth Growers, so that they became the primary account holder, able to deal directly with the energy provider and thereby cutting down the time Andy needed to spend on this rather mundane but time-consuming activity.

Administration was further eased for both Andy and the other business by setting up a direct debit between Good Earth Growers and the energy provider.

The Results

Three days from when we received Andy’s instructions, IU Energy sorted out both challenges.

Good Earth Growers have a three-year fixed green tariff and the administration of the energy supply has been dramatically reduced for everyone involved.
