The Client

Heartwood Tree Management is a tree management company, using the latest equipment and techniques. They pride themselves on their commitment to supply a professional and speedy service. In the same fashion, their work is of the highest quality.

The company takes on jobs ranging from small domestic work to larger commercial projects. In addition, Heartwood Tree Management understands the importance of protecting the environment. Notably, it is committed to minimising environmental impact.

The Challenge

In this case, late in 2017, IU Energy was invited to survey Heartwood Tree Management’s main site.  In particular this was for the installation of a commercial log boiler. The new system was to supply highly efficient site-wide heating and hot water.  Furthermore, underground distribution was suggested as the means of delivery.

To emphasise, the system specified needed to be a biomass district heating system to supply process heating to the commercial log kiln, as well as space and water heating to the adjacent house. The plant room would be within an existing building.

By the same token, the system had to be easy to control and monitor, requiring as little input as possible from its operators. Likewise, it had to qualify for the Government’s RHI scheme (Renewable Heat Incentive).

The Solution

In summary, this is a typical biomass boiler case study, with immediate benefits. At the heart of the proposed district heating system, we installed an ETA SH 60kW log boiler.

The boiler supplies Low Temperature Heating Water (LTHW) to a 3000l ETA accumulator tank. This is via an RHI approved heat meter which measures energy generation. With the site-wide underground distribution classified as a deemed heat loss, further meters for RHI submissions were not necessary.

Additionally, we supplied and installed a variable temperature export circuit. This supplies heat to the residential dwelling via a pre-insulated underground heatmain.  It also supplies the log kiln via above ground pipework.

The ETA touch screen control system we installed operates the boiler combustion and components as well as all the peripheral pumps, valves, sensors and heat meters. This advanced control technology uses data from across the building to calculate and modulate the required heat demand, thus reducing export temperatures throughout the distribution pipework and increasing overall system efficiency. The control systems intuitive user interface is also accessible remotely.

As part of our standard service, IU Energy also completed the RHI application, which was successful.

The Results

In short, delivery of the entire system was on-time, within budget.

Projections are that the system will yield the following results –

  • Total cost benefit over twenty years c. £108,536
  • Total annual cost benefit – c. £5,427
  • System Payback – 6.3 years
  • Projected Return on Investment % – 10.9
