The Client

Situated just minutes from Newquay’s golden sandy beaches, this multi-award-winning park set in 80 acres of landscaped parkland truly has it all. Boasting a string of awards for its facilities, and accolades for its environmental and sustainable tourism achievements, Hendra offers holidays with a truly family ambiance. The park is the perfect choice for a family fun Cornwall holiday by the seaside and its central Cornwall location makes it the perfect spot for exploring the county.

The Challenge

Hendra Holiday Park is renowned for sustainable development and the owners wanted to extend this to their heating and hot-water systems for their entire site, using a renewable technology with control from within the park and remotely. Additionally, Hendra had previously endured a poor experience with another installer who had already fitted one biomass boiler – this was not functioning to spec or working in sync with the older supplementary oil boilers. For the envisaged upgrade we were tasked with fixing the existing install and providing a fully integrated system, requiring minimum supervision and maintenance.

The element of control was an essential consideration as it had to be capable of managing and operating the mix of technologies. Given the widespread nature of the park, this presented several challenges distributing the hot water efficiently.

The Solution

After an extensive technical site survey, IU Energy altered and improved the set-up of the poorly performing boiler and specified an additional low temperature biomass hot water boiler. This was fitted along with an automatic fuel feed from one fuel store, servicing both boilers and minimising attendance and refuelling time. To deliver the hot water across this extensive area required 200m of new internal pipework to be connected through the distribution plant room. An advanced touch screen control system was installed to operate boiler combustion, satellite components and all the peripheral pumps, valves and sensors.

This advanced control technology uses data from across the site to calculate and modulate the required heat demand, thus reducing export temperatures throughout the underground pipeline network and increasing overall system efficiency. The control system’s intuitive user interface is also accessible remotely.

The installation was delivered on-time, within budget and immediately performed to spec.
