Places of Worship

Truro Methodist Church

Whether it’s lighting for churches, heating for churches or of course, electricity and gas for churches, IU Energy has great experience of supplying energy and related technologies to places of worship. This spans the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, to vibrant community hubs like Truro Methodist Church.  Over 18 years of trading, our work in places of worship is now widespread.

As a minimum we supply green energy to most of these centres, in line with their environmentally friendly agendas.

The energy challenges in places of worship

The forecast trend of grid electricity and gas pricing is upwards. That’s never great news when you often have high ceilings and little compartmentalisation to contain heat efficiently. Equally, lighting for churches can be a challenge.

For places of worship, the first thing to remember is that it’s better not to spend funds on energy. Far better that they go on upkeep and improving visitor and congregation experience. Just a slight percentage difference between providers can save thousands of pounds over the duration of an energy contract.

For this reason, most custodians believe that there are better fixed rate deals available than they’re often getting. Their foresight usually protects them from market volatility for several years.

With many churches also acting as community hubs and offering a diverse range of activities several days of the week, the need to drive down energy cost and usage is paramount. even more so if you happen to be a national tourist attraction like St Paul’s Cathedral – restaurants alongside historically significant churches and cathedrals are by no means rare now, placing further demands on energy. Even coffee mornings in their smaller counterparts increase costs.

What are our options for renewable energy and energy efficiency in a place of worship?

Before considering technology, a good place to start is with sourcing the best value electricity and gas tariffs. IU Energy is independent and therefore investigates the entire energy market, sourcing the right provider for every place of worship we consult. We are trusted not to hide any of the charges which can distort the true cost of energy.

If sustainability is a stated aim, going ‘green’ can be as simple as buying a green electricity tariff; many places of worship require their needs to be supplied by green energy alone.  Even so, the most compelling evidence of cost savings and even earnings arises from using renewable energy and energy efficient technologies.

The challenge of using energy efficient and renewable technology is not impairing the appearance of often beautiful, historic buildings, so some of the more obvious technologies like solar panels are usually out of the question.

However, the following are all possibilities, with one example capable of driving down costs significantly and also qualifying for 20-year income from RHI (Renewable Incentive Scheme).

  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Battery Storage
  • Condensing Gas Boilers
  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
  • Fixed-term Green Electricity Tariffs
  • Lighting for churches – commercial LED Lighting

None of these seriously affect the appearance of the buildings they are installed in, but they do bring major benefits.

VAT Refund Audits

We shouldn’t forget to mention this either as it may mean we can get you a refund, as well as cutting thousands of pounds off your energy bill and driving down your carbon emissions.

In summary, IU Energy has the capability of delivering all these options to places of worship.
