North Nethercleave Farm

North Nethercleave Farm

  • Biomass
  • £10,000 PA RHI income
  • Locally sourced fuel

The Client

Nethercleave is North Devon’s prime equestrian retreat. North Nethercleave Farm in Umberleigh, Devon, was built in 1887 and consists of a large farmhouse, four holiday lets and a livery yard. It is a former working Victorian farm, built around the main farm house and surrounded by acres of lush pasture. The rest of the farm is made up of luxury chalets and working stables, fully equipped for a ride out into the surrounding countryside.

If you love horses, or want to experience equine life for the first time, Nethercleave offers country hacks, stable experience, grooming and feeding. All this is coupled with the essential luxury demanded by today’s discerning traveller. The accommodation comprises 3 luxury chalets of 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms, nestled within the heart of the Taw Valley.

The Challenge

The farmhouse was heated via oil, which became unreliable and expensive.

Owner Angus Cook was keen to find a cheaper, greener fuel option which would also be able to provide his new holiday lets with hot water and underfloor heating.

The Solution

  • Cost-effective – IU Energy recommended a wood chip biomass (90kW ETA Hack) boiler with an automated fuel delivery system to supply the estate. We also installed underfloor heating and a hot water system
  • Remote Control and Monitoring – Highly efficient control from a central location, with automatic fault notification
  • Local and self-sufficient fuel options -Angus can either source fuel from a local supplier, or chip his own wood on site
  • Mitigating risk – Having this flexibility of fuel sources provides Angus with a degree of risk mitigation, in comparison to fluctuating oil, gas and electricity prices. This was an important factor in his decision process

The Results

The biomass system proved a worthwhile investment for Angus:

  • Reducing his running costs
  • Ensuring cost-effective and reliable heating without the reliance on small, inefficient electric heaters
  • Earning approximately £10,000 per year, via the Government’s RHI Scheme
  • Enabling him to remain competitive by being able to offer competitive rates in the holiday lets
  • Enabling him to regulate his own heating system via the control panel installed

”We can now heat the property fully without running up a large oil bill or killing the planet. The blended heating system and programmable system controls means that the heating feels much more natural and in tune with our lifestyle. I can also see remotely, exactly what is happening with the heating in the holiday lets without needing to disturb our guests.

I chose IU Energy on the basis of their technical expertise, cost effectiveness, flexibility and that it was a business to business deal (many other companies that quoted didn’t take the time to work through the timing and cash flow of the project). We worked together to get it right for our small business, making it possible to maximise our use of annual investment allowances. We can’t recommend them enough.”
