Case Study – Sydenhams

THE CLIENT

Leading independent timber and builders merchants, Sydenhams, have a long tradition of supplying timber and building materials throughout Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Oxfordshire, Avon and the Isle of Wight.

Established in Poole in 1874, Sydenhams now incorporates a timber engineering business and supplies building needs throughout its network of 28 branches across the UK.

THE CHALLENGE

Sydenhams qualify for the government’s mandatory Energy Saving’s Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and contacted IU Energy after a personal recommendation was made from a similar business who had achieved ESOS compliance through IU Energy.

Sydenhams prepared well in-advance of the compliance deadline, to ensure compliance was achieved by 5TH Dec 2015. IU Energy were commissioned to conduct the in-depth energy audits across Sydenhams’ network of buildings and transport vehicles to produce a mandatory report, listing the savings identified.

The scheme requires large undertakings – employing 250 staff or more and/or have a turnover in excess of £38.9m and a balance sheet of £33.4m – to conduct mandatory energy assessments every 4 years.

THE SOLUTION

IU Energy worked closely with Sydenhams to ensure the work was completed on time and submitted to theEnvironment Agency.

Those organisations who qualify for ESOS who did not submit their reports by the 5th Dec deadline, or at least notified the EA that they had appointed a ‘lead assessor’ (such as IU Energy) and the work was underway by the end of January could have received a ‘hefty’ fine, up to £50,000.

THE RESULTS

IU Energy are experienced energy consultants and have built an impressive portfolio of clients, particularly in achieving ESOS compliance for significant businesses e.g. RGB Holdings, Foot Anstey LLP and Princess Yachts International plc.

As such, Sydenhams met their ESOS committments well within time.
