The Client

Truro Methodist Church is an active, lively and developing Christian church at the heart of the beautiful city of Truro, Cornwall.

Their worship life is varied and they offer a range of different worship styles and times throughout the week. The Church has a full programme of activities for people of all ages and an extensive outreach programme, working with the surrounding community.

Many people give up hours of their own time because they believe in what the Church is building. In addition to their many volunteers they have one full-time minister, two part-time pastoral assistants and two administrative assistants who are responsible for aspects of the ministry.

The Challenge

A reduction in energy costs or usage can make a significant difference to any organisation, and particularly a place of worship where profit is measured in the spiritual and personal development of people, rather thanfinancial gain.

After a free, no-obligation review of Truro Methodist Church’s gas and electricity bills, we established that they were using a significant amount of energy at uncompetitive rates. We also discovered that they had been paying VAT at 20% rather than 5%, as a Charity.

As a committed community player, the Church also wanted to play their part towards being net-zero Carbon, so requested a green electricity tariff, whilst being mindful of costs.

In a market that’s always rising, the challenge is increasingly to protect your organisation from price
increases. In Truro Methodist Church’s case, our task was to save them money for three years on both their gas and electricity: No small request given market volatility. We also needed to seek a refund for overpaid VAT.

The Solution

IU Energy is an independent energy broker, with a string of awards gained over 18 years of trading. These awards are mostly for honest trading and understanding of customer ROI when we’re designing and installing energy saving solutions.

For Truro Methodist Church, our independence meant we were able to investigate the whole commercial electricity and gas markets rather than a small cross-section. We recommended the right electricity and gas deals for them, because a low kWh rate does not guarantee a low bill, if there are hidden third party charges (such as transport from the National Grid).

We worked hard to compare the market and found that significant savings were possible, even with a green electricity tariff. We presented suitable quotes from a range of trusted suppliers. We also submitted a credit claim to HMRC for overpaid VAT.

In addition to saving the Church money, IU Energy managed the administration of the contracts and ensured the process was seamless, eliminating stress for our client.

Throughout the process, the Church benefited from a dedicated account manager to answer all their questions. This included consulting with the suppliers, taking care of administration and ensuring they were happy with their new agreements.

The Results

We made savings on electricity and gas over three and four fixed term contracts, and gained a VAT refund –

  • Overall saving on electricity and gas over life of contracts – £4,220
  • VAT refund – c. £2,500
